May is the time when everything smells likeearly summerin Okinawa and is probably the best time to visitthe islands. The sea is at its bluest and the bathing season in its prime. There are several events happening during Golden Week (from 29thApril to early May). This is a great opportunity for a weekend getaway to Okinawa, before the rain season and, above all, before the hordes of tourists.

8th May is GōyāDay, a festival which was established to better promote gōyā, known in English by the name “bitter squash”, whose production peaks in the beginning of May. A staple of the Okinawan cuisine, gōyā is known nationwide to be high in vitamin C and instrumental in preventing heat illnessduring the hot Japanese summer. The islands are also renowned for the Okinawan scallion (shima-rakkyō), sea-grapes (umi-budō, a species ofseaweed) and passion fruit.

In Okinawa, hotels and resorts with a garden pool are a standard. However, there has been a trend towards smaller and cosier types of accommodation. If you are looking for a quiet private cottage, surrounded by nature and in touch with the welcoming warmth of the locals, here are a few recommendations.
